Where?

Isla Canela is on the Spanish Algarve, just a few hundred metres from the border with Portugal across the river Guadiana and adjoining the old frontier town of Ayamonte.

Nearest airport is Faro, 45 minutes away, or Seville 75 minutes.

The island includes a golf course area, miles of beach, 2km down the road, a Marina including shops and restaurants, and a small fishing village Punta Morel, with good fish restaurants.

Just back onto the mainland is Ayamonte, the old frontier town, from where there is a ferry over to Vila Real St Antonio on the Portuguese side. The motorway running along the length of the Spanish and Portuguese Atlantic resorts is just the other side of Ayamonte, crossing the river by way of a spectacular suspension bridge, making this a great base for touring, whether for pleasure or golf.

2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, lounge, kitchen, utility area, and 3 terraces.

Basement car parking place, and electronic security gates.

It is on the top floor of a 3 storey building, enjoying a good size terrace off the lounge, overlooking the communal pool and the golf course, beyond which are the marshes, and river. There is a small terrace off the main bedroom, and another large area overlooking the front gardens of the building.

 

There is communal swimming pool of good size; and tennis courts 200m away.

We bought it only in summer 2005, and are very pleased with it.

We have air conditioning units in the lounge and both bedrooms; Satellite freeview box including DVD player; washing machine and tumble drier in a utility area off the kitchen; Oven, hob and microwave, fridge with freezer compartment. The communal gardens are well maintained, and we have some plants out on the front terrace with auto watering system.

 

Golf & leisure facilities.

Apartment owners and tenants get reduced green fees for the golf course, and there are also discounts for a book of tickets. The course is well kept, fairly new, with some challenging holes. The clubhouse is nice, and serves reasonable food. There are 2 bowling greens adjoining it, and a swimming pool.

There is a 4 star hotel close by offering  bar and restaurant facilities.

2 tennis courts are 200m down the road, and can be booked through the concierge at the entrance.

 

The communal pool is large, and open April to October.

There are a number of other good golf courses within 30 minutes; Castro Marim just into Portugal, and a brand new one just opened on that side of the border, also Quinta de Cima & Quinta de Ria a bit further. In Spain, Esuri just opened 15 minutes away, Islantilla, and El Rompido a bit further.

 

 

Around the area.

The old frontier towns of Ayamonte and Vila Real are well worth a visit, good waterfront areas. Portugal is very accessible along the Algarve. Seville a good day out, and several nature reserves in Andulucia.
